HAWKE'S BAY EDUCATION BOARD.
Tins Day. The Board met at 11 a.m. Present: Mr J. D. Ormond (chairman), Rev. D. Sidey, and Messrs AY. AVhite, R. Harding, F. Sutton, M.H.R., and J. N. AVilliams. NEW MEMBER. The Chairman said the first business was the election of a member to fill the vacancy at the Board caused by the resignation of Mr Lee. The total votes recorded by tho committee for Mr Guy were 21, and for Mr Tanner 7.—Mr Guy was declared to be duly elected. CORRESPONDENCE. Tho following inward correspondence was read :— From Gisborne, recommending Mr Bull, assistant master, and Miss Mcintosh, infant school mistress, for increases of salary.— The secretary said tho average attendance at Gisborne had greatly increased of late, and he thought an increase of £25 per annum each might be granted to Mr Bull and Miss Mcintosh. He Avas, however, in favor of another mistress being appointed to the school instead of a third master. It was necessary, he considered, in order to maintain the "moral tone" of the school, as on the completion of the new infant school Miss Mcintosh Avould go over to it, aud there Avould be no female teacher loft in the main school. —It avus resolved to grant Mr Bull an increase of £50 per annum and Miss Mcintosh .-'2;3. It wus also agreed that a, mistress be appointed in the place of Miss Morgan, avlio goes to tlic AVellington Training College, at a salary of 4,' HO per annum.
From the same, stating that £1 over the amount of grant for building two chimneys at the school had been expended, and asking the Board to sanction the expenditure. —Agreed to. From Hastings, asking that a patent ventilator be fixed in the schoolroom.— Deferred. From Kaikora., notifying the resignation by Miss Howard of her position as assistant mistress,—Accepted. An assistant mistress to fill the vacancy to be advertised for at a salary of ,£GO per annum. From Kumeroa, applying for sections S, 9, and 11, Block VII., Kumeroa township, us. sites for school and residence.—Agreed that application be made for the sections in accordance with tlic committee's recommendation. From Meanee, recommending the appointment of Mr J. Naylor as n^astor. —■ Approved, From the same, asking for a grant of £_0 to build another room to the master's residence. —Declined. From Mohaka, applying for a grant of £15 towards the cost of providing a new room for the mistress.—Resolved that tho attendance docs not justify the grant being made. From Napier, recommending the appointment of Miss Jane Montcitli to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Miss Corbin. —Appro vcd. From the same enclosing a list of those candidates who intend to compete for tho Board's scholarship for the year 1883.
From the same, stating that Mr Colcnso's offer was to pay one-third of the cost of the fencing between the main school and his property.—Resolved that the Bom-d will pay one-half, as stated, towards the erection of the dividing fence. From Patangata, stating that the proposed alterations to the master's residenco Avere inadequate, and enclosing a sketch of Avhat Avould bo suitable.—Agreed that the proposed alterations be agreed to, subject to the architect assenting to same, and providing the vote is not exceeded. From Puketapu, asking for a grant of £8 for papering the rooms of the school. — Approved. From Port Ahuriri, calling attention to the manner in Avbieh the contractor is carrying out tlic Avork of additions to the school.—lt Avas' resolved that the architect; bo requested to sec into the matter,
From Mrs AVostnioveland, resigning her position as mistress of the Tamumu school on account of ill-health, and asking the Board to', "axept" same as from 31st inV stunt. —" Axeptcd" accordingly. From Takapau, applying for a grant of £10 for painting the school.—Declined. From Mr J.Poole, master of tho AVaipukurau school, enclosing the resignation of his daughter as pupil teacher on the ground of ill-health, and statingthat, Avith the consent of tho committee, Miss Palmer Avas at present carrying out Miss Poole's duties.—Tho resignation avus accepted, and tho appointment of Miss Palmer as a candidate for pupil teacher confirmed. From Norsewood, pointing out the necessity for an additional porch to the school. Tlic erection of a diA'iding fence to separate the conveniences for the boys and girls was also required, as avcll as other small matters. —Agreed that the committee's grant be increased from £30 to £15 on the express condition that the AVorks mentioned by the committee bo carried out.
From the Education Department, in reply to the position of candidates in this district Avho presented themsch'cs for examination as teachers, stating that tho Government could not comply Avith the Board's request. THE AVOODVILLK MASTER. A petition Avas received from certain residents at AVooelville with respect to the removal of the present master. In connection Avith this matter a letter was read from the secretary to the School Committee stating that the majority of tho committee Avere in favor of the retention of the present master. A telegram to tho same effect from the chairman of the comndttco Avas also received. TENDERS. Several tenders for Avorks Avere opened, but, being far in excess of tho amounts at disposal in each instance, none were accepted.
architect's report. Tho following report was received from the Board's architect :— Care-taker's House, Napier.—l have carefully examined this building, and beg to suggest that the following repairs and alterations be made thereon, viz. :— 1. The Tlean-to at, back to be covered Avith corrugated iron, and chimney flashings repaired. 2. Bed room adjoining kitchen to be lined, and papered. .'!. A passage to be constructed from the front door to kitchen, and the passage and sitting room repapored. -1 The earth closet to bo repaired, and two closet pans provided—one to be used as a dust box. 5 Front area to be levelled up and tarred. Tho works I estimate Avould cost about £IG. Napier Infant School Roof.—Tenders for repairs and alterations to bell turret, amounting to £11 10s, have been obtained, and the Avork will bo commenced on Tuesday. WaipaAva. School. —I have supplied the requisite drawings for bell turret. Gisborne.—The new in class room are completed to my satisfaction. With regard to an underground tank, for
tho storage'of rain Avater, 1 beg to suggest that ono be placed in the playground, adjoining fcui'c to teacher's house, of a not je--s /-apacity than 5.(100 gallons. This including three pumps, I estimate Avould cost (iii concrete) about £00. AVaerangi-a-liiki.—l have examined the school, building, and beg to suggest that it should be converted into a bachcr's house by dividing it up and adding a lean-to, and that a new school house should be built similar to that proposed for Frasertown. Ormond.—The school house is in good repair, but requires a new chimney-piece, and a concrete fender. A very suitable site is reserved for teacher's house, ancl I estimate that a suitable building might be erected for about £200. Taradale and Port Ahuriri Schools.—l have to report that the contractor is proceeding satisfactorily with these contracts. Matewhei'o.—Tho closets to this school require some repairs, and some arrangement for draining the urinal. Robert Lamb, Architect.
The recommendations Avith respect to Napier Avere approved. The question of the underground tank at Gisborne avus deferred, as avcto also the recommendations affecting the Waerangi-a-hika and Orniond schools.' It avus agreed to inform the committee of the state of the closets at Matawhero. CLOSING SCHOOLS AVITHOUT LEAVE. The foUoAviug resolution on this subject was adopted:—"That a circular be sent through the School Committees for teachers in charge of schools stating that it has come to "the notice of the Board that schools are closed iv some cases by teachers Avithuut the assent of the committees being first obtained, and that any future cases of this description AviU be severely dealt Avith by the Board." Tho usual monthly accounts having been passed for payment, the Board adjourned.
