NAPIER WORKING MEN'S CLUB.

The half-yearly meeting of the above Avas held in the club hall on Saturday night, and Avas largely attended. Air T. AY. Bear, President, occupied the chair. half-yearly report. The folloAA'ing report Avas submitted by the outgoing committee : — The number of members has notmatcrially increased, although 40 members entered during the half-year, tho present numerical strength of the club being. 10 life members, 18 honorary, and 203 ordinary. The steward's salary Avas raised from £S0 to ..90 per annum, in accordance Avith the recommendation of the prcA-ious committee. Air AY. Hodgson, our late energetic secretary, having resigned his office tenders Avero inA-itcd, and Air Lound being the loAvest tenderer Avas appointed secretary at a salary of £10 per annum. Tho sum of £72 15s has been paid for improvements mostly completed during the previous year. The alterations to bar and card-room, also tin- shifting of the library, have been effected during the half-year. A further insurance of £100 on the premises has also been effected at a reduced rate. Your committee Avish to draAV the attention of the members to the large reduction ■which has been made in the tradesmen's accounts, viz., £81 7s 9d. The billiard-table has also been paid for, besides the £72 15s expended in improvements. The club therefore stands on a sound financial basis, the balance to credit and bar stock being nearly equal to the outstanding accounts. Your committee regret very much that certain circumstances arose to cause mis- ' understandings in the club and that it Avas necessary to hold a special general meeting to deal Avith those misunderstandings, and that at that meeting a member Avas expelled. The old question of a check on the steAvard has been freely discussed in committee, and your committee beg to recommend to the incoming committee to introduce the system of checks as practised in the Clmstchurch Club. Your committee also think that the library committee, hitherto elected by the general meetings, should he aboHslied, and tlie control of the library vested in the Club Committee. Iv conclusion the committee Avish to express their full confidence and satisfaction with the efforts of the stCAvardaud steAvardess to forward tho interests of the club. BALANCE-SHEET. The balance-sheet shoAved receipts during the half-year (including £00 ls 8d brought forward) amounting to £070 4s 7d, the principal items being refreshments £-100 9s _d, subscriptions £72 12s, and billiards and other games £54 10s 3d. The expenditure amounted to £000 ls sd, leaving a balance in hand and at the bank of £19 3s 2d. Tho statement of liabilities and assets showed the former to be £849 10s -Id, and the latter £1514 5s Bd, leaving a balance to credit of £004 15s -Id. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. "MEMBERSHIP. Air T. AI. Murphy moved that rule 7 beso amended as to proA'ide that new members shall be elected by ballot to be taken by the committee, one black ball in three to ex- >-. elude. Air J. Forster seconded the motion, which Avas negatived. Air Alurphy then moved that a new rulebe adopted to the effect that no expelled member be allowed on the club premises. A vote having been taken the President declared the motion carried. Air Brydcn demanded a poll, Avhen it Avas fonnd that the voting Avas even on either side, and the resolution Avas negatived by the casting vote of the chairman. ELECTION OF OFFICERS. The election of office-bearers for the current term resulted as folioavs :—President, Air J. Muii-ay; Treasurer, Air AA 7 ". L. White: Auditors, Alessrs F. W. Garner and F. Bee ; Committee, Alessrs Plowman, Grigg, Alurphy, CoAvlrick, Upchurch, Parker, AVuudruin, Soiuerville, Aloody, and A. Faulknor. The meeting concluded Avith the customary A*otes of thanks and the address of the ueAvly-elected President.
