COTTAGE DESTROYED BY FIRE AT HASTINGS.

Yesterday evening, about G o'clock, a cottage in Hastings occupied by AA r . Dewston, and oAvned by Mr Henry J. Thompson, was totally destroyed by fire. The buildingwas insured in the Union office for £100, but the furniture and effects, including a valuable set of carpenter's tools, together with £8 in notes, the property of Air Dc-Avston, AA-ere all consumed. The tire appears to have been purely accidental, and seems to have occurred under the folloAving circumstances: DeAVston left his oavii house to go to a neighbour's to tea, leaving the foe" burning, and it is supposed that a firebrand fell from the fireplace to the floor, •*- and" thus set fire to the AA-hole building. So rapidly did the fire spread that, Avith the exception of a pair of boots, Air DeAVston has lost everything.
