The births registered here in January were 190; marriages, 39 ; deaths, 92. In January last year there were 162 births, 27 marriages, and 54 deaths. The large increase of deaths this month is probably due to the prevalence of diarrhoea and choloraic complaints, Avhich have been unusually severe.
A largely-attended meeting of representatives from local bodies was held yesterday to consider the subject of charitable aid. The Hon. E. C. J. Stevens Avas in the chair. The tenor of the speeches was obviously in favor of a system of endowments. Tho folloAA'ing resolution was proposed: — '' That this meeting is of opinion that the funds required for charitable aid purposes should be provided from local sources in conjunction with a GoA'ernment subsidy." This Avas negatived by 18 to 8, and the folio wing amendment carried on the voices : — '' That in the opinion of this convention the proper Avay to pro\dde for the future maintenance of hospitals and charitable aid institutions is by the Legislature making large and .substantial endoAyments for them out of the waste lands of the colony, and in tl.e. meantime the expense of the institutions should be borne by the consolidated re-. A-eniie."
