The contractor for the construction of the patent slip at Lyttelton commenced work yesterday.

The Railway League met last night, and appointed a committee to collect statistics relative to the various routes to the West Coast. The League will meet every week. Colonel Tupman and Lieutenant Coke, who have been sent to Canterbury by the British Government to observe the transit of Venus on December 7tb, have nearly completed their preparations at the Observatory at Burnham. They have occupied the buildings erected for the accommodation of Major Palmer, who took the observations at the previous transit, and have got the greater of their instruments in position.
