November 8

A company has been formed here to acquire fiom Sir Julius Vogel the sole right of using the Brush and Lane Fox systems of electric lighting in Victoria. Sir Julius Vogel has nearly completed arrangements for illuminating the Spencer street railway station by the arc light ; and is also making preparations for the installation of incandescent lamps in Elizabeth-street.

During the week Messrs Goldshoro' and Co. (limited) have sold 8300 bales at their wool auctions. Large attendances of home and foreign buyers continue, and prices remain very firm. Greasy wool averaged from 8d to 14f d, several large clips realising Is to Is 2d. Washed wools brought from la 2d to Is 3d. The racehorse Assyrian, the winner of the late Melbourne Cup, has been sold for 400 guineas.

November 9

A destructive fire occurred this afternoon at Nott-street, Sandridge. Twelve houses were totally destroyed. The total loss is estimated at £5000.

The weekly report of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company shows that during the week the wool catalogues have been fair, comprising 1700 bales, principally small lots, though there have been one or two larger clips. Thare has been a large attendance of buyers, with brisk competition, and 1500 bales have been sold. Sound merinos and fine cross-breds have been very firm, but lower grades were slightly irregular ; 114 bales of well-grown combing merino wool from the Western district realised 12£ d; 15 bales from the Murray fetched 13d, while 12|d was bid for 92 bales of fine cross-br6ds from the Western district ; for 24 bales of scoured super combing 22Jd was obtainable.
