PETANE RACE.

The above races came off yesterday, and what, under more favorable circumstances, would have been a most cu-joy-able meeting was marred somewhat ty the very inclement weather that prevailed during the whole morning. In spite of threatening appearances, however, a good number of vi?itors from town proceeded out by coaches and other vehicles, and these were rewarded by a fine afternoon, the rain clearing off' shortly after 12 o'clock. The racing was as good as might be expected at a country meeting, and the course arrangements gave every satisfaction. Major Richardson as judge, Colonel White as clerk of the scales and starter, and Mr Steven as secretary, were each successful in winning confidence in the discbarge of their respective duties. A special word of praise is due to Mr Villera wbo provided an excellent luncheon, and left nothing undone to secure the comfort of his patrons. There was one totalisator on tbe ground, worked by Messrs Cohen and Stock, which did a fair amount of business. Tbe following are the results of the several events :•—>

A protest was lodged by some person, who alleged that she ran inside a post, buf after an enquiry it was disallowed. Neither of the other two horses were in the race from start to finish, although.all got away well together. THE WELTER HANDICAP, Of 30 soys; twice round the course, about 2 miles; gentlemen riders. The race was virtually between Virginia Water and Kincraig, Mavis making a very poor show. A pro- 1 test laid against Kincraig for running in- < side a post was disallowed, and he appro- ] priated the stakes. hack race, Of 5 soys. 1 mile.
