WELLINGTON.

September 27,

The plant and stores belonging to the New Zealand Rifle Association have been shipped at Nelson per Penguin for Dunedin.

At the Police Court yesterday the lad William Barnacle was formally charged with manslaughter in running over a child when he was driving a cart. The police offered no evidence, and the lad was discharged.

Dγ Graltham, the new Inspector of Lunatic Asylums for this colony, left England the steamer Austral on the 7th instant, and is expected to reach Melbourne about the middle of next month.

A destructive fire broke out at 10 o'clock last night in the rear of Croskey's (late Croskey and Hassell) auction mart, Lambton Quay. The fire appears to have occurred among some light goods at the back of the store and spread rapidly. At one time it looked as if a very serious conflagration would be the result. Wiggins' saddlery store, adjoining Croskey's on the southern side, was damaged to the extent of about £50, and R. Hoi liday and Co.'s stationer's shop on thnorthern side had a narrow escape. The fire was mainly confined to the mart, which ia pretty well gutted, but most of the stock was saved. The origin of the fire is unknown, no person having been on the premises since 6 o'clock in the evening. The Fire Brigade were soon on the spot, but there was great delay in getting water on, eeveral of the couplings of the hose going one after the other. Fortunately the wind, which had been blowing hard all day, died away just before the outbreak, otherwise several other buildings would have been destroyed. Mr Croskey's auction mart (which is owned by Mr Duff) is insured for £500 in the Colonial office, of which £300 are re-insured; the stock is insured for £500 in the Standard office. Mr Holliday's stock is partly damaged, and is insured for £2,050, distributed as follows :—£soo in the Norwich Union office, £250 in the Standard office, £500 in the Imperial office, £800 in the Colonial office, £650 being re-insured. Mr Wiggins' saddlery store is slightly damaged, and is insured for £600 in the Imperial office, and for £200 in the National office. The stock is uninsured, and Mr Wiggins estimates his lose at £150.
