MELBOURNE.
August 30, 1.20 p.m. The train w' 1 _h met with an accident this morning at Polimont was an express from Brighton to Melbourne. The disaster occurred at 9 a.m., when the train ran off the line. Three carriages were hurled over an embankment into a swamp; one first-class carriage was smashed to pieces, and the other two were overturned. Three passengers were extricated dead from the first-class carriage. The scene at the place of the disaster wis most distressing, and great excitement prevailed throughout the city and suburbs over tbe occurrence. Traffic on the line is entirely suspended. The following additional Dames of injured passengers have transpired :—Edwards, Wright, and Edwards. 7.30 p.m. It is stated that Stephen, who was seriously injured at the railway accident this morning, died this evening. It has transpired that the deceased gentleman was a relative of Judge Stephens. AU the other injured persons are progressing favorably. 10.30 pm. The report of Stephen's death has been contradicted. He is still alive, but the doctors hold out no hope of his recovery. The total number of persons injured amounts to twenty. August 81. E. J. Agg, accountant of the Lands Department, has been committed for trial on a charge of forgery. Bail was allowed to the amount of £4000. A most destructive fire broke out at a drapery store at Wodonga last night, and before it could be extinguished considerable damage was done. The loss i_ estimated at £5000.
