LONDON.
August 1. The death is announced of Mr Pond, of the firm of Spiers and Pond the well known catering firm, and proprietors of the Criterion Hotel, and theatre Regent Circus. August 2. A very strong feeling is growing in England in favor of modifying the present free trade tariff, with a view to establish reciprocity with other countries. Complaints are made that owing to the policy of protection maintained in the United States, and several of the most important colonies the export trade of Great Britain is seriously injured, and her industrial supremacy threatened. In the manufacturing districts an agitation has been set on foot for the purpose of securing reciprocity, and with this object a league has been formed called the v National Free Trade League," which is receiving influential support. August 4. Owing to the wholesale bribery at the last general elections in several borough conetituences, the Government have determined to act upon the recommendation of the Commission appointed to investigate the more flagrant cases, and to propose to the House of Commons that seven boroughs be disfranchised.
