PATANGATA HIGHWAY DISTRICT.
The annual meeting of the ratepayers of the Patangata Highway District was held at the Rai'way Hotel, Kaikora, on Friday, the 15th instant, at 2 o'clock p.m. Mr W. White in the chair. The balance-sheet was read and passed. The meeting then proceeded to elect the wardens for the ensuing year, when the following gentlemen were proposed, viz., Messrs White, M'Greevy, Small, Lawrence, Dillon, Evans, Howard, Collins, Bowden, Hickey, and Scrimgeour. It was then proposed by Mr Dillon, seconded by Mr Collins, that cumulative voting be taken, on which point a warm discussion ensued.
Mr Dillon's motion being put to the meeting there were 15 in favor of single and 7 in lavor of cumulative voting, but the chairman ruled in favor of cumulative voting. Mr Lawrence then moved that no proxies should be taken, which led to some considerable excitement, and Mr White vacated the chair. After some little delay the ratepayers proceeded with tbe business of the meeting, Mr M'Greevy being elected chairman, when the following gentlemen were elected by ballot, viz., Messrs M'Greevy, Small, Dillon, Newbould jun., and Collins. Proposed by Mr J.Collins, and seconded by Mr A. Bowden, tbat tbe balance-pheet for the year be passed as read.
Proposed.'by Mr J. Collins, and seconded by MrNewbould, that Messrs Moffit and Murton be appointed as auditors for the ensuing year. A vote of thanks to the chair terminated the public meeting, and the newlyelected wardens met and elected Mr A. Dillon as chairman, and it was proposed by Mr M'Greevy, and seeoaded by Mr Newbould, that the clerk's services be retained at the same salary as last year.
