AUCKLAND.
June 24. Mr G. T. Chapman, publisher, an old colonist, who started the first Mechanic's Institute in Dunedin, died to-day.
In the case of Johnson v. Smith, a claim for damages for a kick sustained by Johnson's boy through defendant's race horse exercising in Albert Park under permit from the City Council, Judge Macdonald held that the Council had no power to give such permit, and therefore Smith was acting illegally.
