THE AUSTRALIAN CRICKETERS AT CHRISTCHURCH.

(by telegraph.)

Cheistchoech, January 31

A stiff north-easter was blowing all Saturday. It did not, however, interfere mucb with the match. The ground presented a very animated appearance, a number of booths with flags flying giving it a thoroughly holiday aspect. There •were about 6000 persone on the ground. Ollivier, the Canterbury captaid, won tbe toss, and sent bis men to the wickets. The fielding of the Australians was brilliant, but the batting of the Canterbury team was decidedly at fault, with the exception of Secretan, who made 30 (not out), Leach 18, and W. Frith 16. Up to luncheon time, the prospects of Canterbury were good, but after luncheon the wickets fell rapidly, and the innings closed for 90.

After a short interval the Australians went to the wickets, Spoftorth and Groube batting to the bowling of Fuller and Fritb. Spoflorth was very soon bowled after he had scored 3, but Groube was not disposed of until 42 appeared against his name. M'Donnell was caught after he bad made 7, but Murdoch made a determined stand, and when time was called be had scored 43, not out. Tbe Australians therefore had three wickets down for 95. cantehbuet's first innings.
