SYDNEY.

January 12

It has transpired that Mr Becket, whose premises were destroyed by fire last night, was absent at the time from Sydney, he having gone to Shoalhaven. The insurances comprise :—-On the stock: Mercantile Company, £4000 ; New Zealand Company, £4,000; City Mutual, North British, and London and Lancashire Company, each £2,000 ; total, £14,000. On the building : United Company, £6,000, half of which was reinsured in the Victoria and Australian Alliance Companies.

Mr Skuthorpe telegraphs that he has obtained the journal of Leichard, the explorer, for the whole trip, and Classan's journal for half the journey. Both are in good preservation.
