SOUTHERN TELEGRAMS.
NEW PLYMOUTH, Tuesday. IRONSAND SMELTING AT HENUI. A large meeting was held last night, convened by Mr. E. M. Smith, to explain why the smelting at Henui was a failure. He had diagrams, and said he defied tho whole colony to say that ironsand could not be smelted with commercial success. Ho pointed out that little of the iromaud had been put into the furnace, and a man having no confidence in its success was allow ed to "blow in" the furnace. If he (Smith) had a trial he would prove it could be run. — Mr Vivian, who is not a shareholder, thought Mr. Smith should have a chance. — Mr. Mathcson, a shareholder, said he had pointed out twelve months since what would happen, and his words had been verified. Ho moved " Having heard Mr. Smith, this meeting is of opinion that the dneetors would be con •ulting the intereit of the shareholders and community in allowing Mr. Smith the use of the furnace and needful materials to smelt the ironsand." — The 1 esolution was earned unanimously. Over 400 persons were pre •ent.
WELLINGTON, Tuesday. The N.Z.S.S. Co intend selling their re inaining stcanieis and winding up the com pany. A large number of shares have been taken in the newly pi ojected gas company, which undertakes to supply gas at ten shillings nci thousand feet. The results will be then submitted to Government. This evening Jh. Kolleston will ask the Government when they intend to Ihipij down the t.ibles and tates in connection with th', new Fiiendlj Societies Hill.
