BURNING DOWN OF THE TELEGRAPH TOWER.

A coMiT.Kre stoppage of telegraphic correspondence between Auckland and the Thames (wntea our Thames correspondent) has resulted from the burning down of one of the, telegraph towers on the Piako Kiver. The exknt of tho damage is not yet known here, but Mr. Bull (r fhcer in charge of the Grahimstown telegraph elation), accompanied by Mr. Sub- inspector Bullen, and a party of men proceded to the spot this morning, with a view to effecting » temporary communication before evening. The cause of the damage 13 this ; it appears the Piako natives set (ire to the bush and scrub for the purpose of clearing land for cultivation, and the firo communicated with tho wooden tower, which vvas burnt to the water's edge during the night It is suspected that a large number of the telegraph polea have also been destroyed.
