MANGERE .
Ok Tuesday, December 24, the annual school examination of thia district took place in the school house, Mangere, conducted by the Rev. P. Gould, who went through a variety of subjects with the pupils, and found the first class well forward in history, geography, mental arithmetic, grammar, &c. In the lower classes the pupils were well up in the subjects suitable for their age, and the whole of the children well under control. The Rev. F. Gould highly complimented the school-mistress, Mis9 Wigmore, upon the evident pains taken with, and the general efficiency; of, the pupils of the school, and considered there was a marked yearly improvement during the three years aud half of Miss Wigmore's control of the school. The prize list was : First Class — Miss E. Barrett took first prize, Miss M. Leonard gecond, and Miaa M. Barrett third ; a special improvement prize was awarded to Mis3 M. Wallace. In the second class, Master J. Eae took the first, and Miss E. Wallace the eecond prize. About 75 children were mustered. Together with their parents aud visitors, not fewer than 160 persons was present, who partook of the cake and tea provided for them. The parents of the pupils appeared highly gratified, with the scholastic attainments arrived at. A school treat was then given to the young folks in a beautifully and substantially decorated Christmas tree, hung with articles useful, quaint, and instructive, which were all fairly distributed to the assembled children, and, if we may judge from the smiles which beamed on every countenance, received with feelmga of glee and satisfaction. The afternoon was pleasantly passed, in games for the girls, and racing and jumping for the boys, who, when heartily tired of the day's amusement, were taken under the wings of their parents, to enjoy the pleasures of the day over again in happy childhood's dreams. The old young folks— under the care of a few sage and frieudly matrons — wound up the day in dancing measures to excellent music, and thus ended one of the most successful and happy school gatherings that have taken place in Mangere.
