THE LATE FIRE AT THE WHAU.

An inqoest was held in the Whau Public Hall on Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clool, before Dr. Philson, coroner, and a respectable jury of 12, Mr. J. Bollard being foreman, to inquire into the particulars of the burning of the Whau Hotel on the morning of the 18th instant ; the hotel being tten in the occupation of Mr. J. Poppleton, and owned by Mr. J. Palmer. Mr. G. S Graham, of the Norwich Union Insurance Company was present, and also Mr. G. W. Jonea, on behalf of the Royal. Mr. Joy, LL.D., was present, on behalf of Messrs. Poppleton and Palmer. Inspector Broham conducted the examination, which was rather a lengthy one. Mr. Poppleton, Mrs. Poppleton, Mr. Hasell, and Mr. Palmer were closely examined, but the evidence went to prove that the fire was only accidental. The jury, after a short consultation, returned an open verdict.
