LATEST SOUTHERN NEWS. APPOINTMENT OF NEW MEMBERS OF THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL. REPRESENTATION OF THE GOVERNMENT IN THE UPPER HOUSE. POLICE STRIKE IN DUNEDIN. [Per Grevilles Telegram Co. (Reuters Agents).]
WELLINGTON. Saturday. Mr. Robert Hart, of Wellington, and Mr H. Edwards, of Nelson, are to bo called to the Upper House. It is not yet decided who is to represent the Gorernment in the Legislative Council. The Hon. Mr. Waterhouse has been pressed to do bo, but declined on the ground thafc his health would not permit him to undertake the duty. Mr. Gisborne is said to have refuted. Eumour points to Mr. Jame3 Smith, barrister, of Dunedin. The Provincial Council last night passed a resolution to the effect that it is desirable, with the view of rendering the administration of the affairs of the province more simple and efficient, that the Superintendent should be elected by a majority of the Council from the members thereof, or if ohosen from outside the Council that he shall beamembarof theCquncil ex officio, removable by a voto of the majority ; tbat the present power of vetoing ordinances should bo vested in the Governor; that there should be an Executive Council of four members exclusive of the Superintendent, who should be Chairman of the Executive; that the Executive should be appointed or removed by the Council ; that the Government should be asked to bring in a bill next ■ession by the Assembly to authorise these alterations. Mr. James Ir-riug, railway employe", has been ordered by tne Uouncil to be dismissed for declaiming against the Government and Council at a r u blic meeting last night, and agitating ae«inst them.
