DEATH OF A NATIVE CHIEF.
Mom TE Harare?, one of the principal chiefs of the Ngatipaoa tribe, died a day or two 'ago, at the Piako. He was formerly a resident on, the Wharekawa side of the Myth of Tbaaws, but some years ago, preferring the more secluded and safer haunts of the Biako district, loft his former homef for that place, and there ' remained until the time of his death. . Mohi was always ready to help the Europeans when any natire complications arose, and he might very well have exclaimed on his death-bed, "I have done the S*ate some service." But we are not quite prepared to say whether "the State" appreciated his efforts on its behalf, so he could not perhaps have satisfactorily . continned to say, ''and they know it." We are informed that Te Hira and all the Upper Thames natives lef b yest9rday for the Piakp in order to be present at the great tangi, whioh will, W6 have no doubt, be held over Mohi'a remains.— Guardian.
