Hokitijca.— December 1 : The s.s. ' Rangitoto,' Captain Mackie, arrived yesterday at 6 p.m. She left Melbourne on the 25th November, on which day the English mail was four days overdue, and not telegraphed at Adelaide. Passengers— Mrs. Tobiu and child, Mrs. Thomas Duncan, Miss Wilmttt, Miss Fowler, Key. James Lawrie ; Messrs. Kroft, J. Hill, Wood, Gilbert, King, J. R. Batten, Frank Waterhouse. Wellington.— December 1 : The Gazette contains notice that the Government intends to negotiate the purchase from the natives of 46,995 acres of land on the banks pf the Turakina river.— The Wuanganui Municipal petition, with the Superintendent's assent, is gazetted. ' Napier. — Kereopa will be tried here as soon as witnesses summoned from Tauranga arrive per s.s. 'Keera.' Judge Johnston waits here on purpose. • Dunedin. — December 1 : Ewing hat been committed for shooting the Chinaman. He is admitted to bail. — A Chinaman has pleaded guilty to robbing, the race. Sentenced to three months' imprisonment. — December 2 : A Court of Inquiry on the wreck of the 'Ahuriri has returned McKinnon's certificate, »9 the rock is not marked on the charts. The Court censured him, how* * ever, for having sluice valves between tho •■ compartments open, thus defeating the object ■ of watertight compartments. Nelson. — December 2 : A special jury case — the owners of the steamer 'Murray* v. Edwards and Co., owners of the ' Charles Edwards,'for collision at Westporfc. Case lasted for three days ; verdict, £624. The costs ' heavy, there being three lawyers on each side. I Whanuanui. — Tbe Whanganui bridge > was opened by his Excellency the Governer, and was celebrated by a great Volunteer display and general rejoicings. Lady Bowtn was present. Addresses — Europ«an and native— were presented, and the proceedings concluded with a ball. His Excellency held a levee, at which the <£litd of Whanganui presented themselves in goodly number*, and Lady Bowen received the lady residents. The cost of the bridge was £30,000.
