THE EXCHANGE

Mb. Haxxy's Exchange ixWa-rooin, in the I Sew Zealand Insurance Company's building, / Was opened yesterday, and after having J paid it a visit of inspection>we are pleased to V be able to say that its general appearance, and the principles on which it is conducted, confirm the impression we had formed of its probable utility and convenience. The spirited proprietor almost without solicitation has already obtained an incredibly large number of subscribers, and yesterday tbe news-room was well filled by parties, who appeared to enjoy amazingly the privilege of reading the newspapers before a comfortable fire without being deprived of their smoke, and without being debarred from a little friendly conversation—comforts Which at present in any of our news-rooms are effectually denied them. Mr. Haley provides for the accommodation of his visitors all tke leading journals of New Zealand and Australia, as well as a good supply of home and foreign papers, and there is every accommodation for those who are inclined to indulge in a quiet game at chess or draughts. la fact, to those who have occasionally an hour or so on their hands the place presents a great attraction, and even to business men it will b<s found a convenience. A box is kept for the reception of letters and telegrams addressed to subscribers, who will no doubt avail themselves of an arrangement which cannot but afford them great accommodation. Five compact and comfortable offices have been constructed in the newi-room, four of which are let to sharebrokers and others who we think have Secured a great advantage in having their places of business in a room which is auro to be the resort of business men and others. Mr. Haley has however not completed the whole of his arrangements. The large room upitairs, which.is capable apparently of seating from 200 to' 300 people, is in the hands of the mechanics, preparatory to its being converted into a dining-room which is to be conducted on first-class principles, and we believe it is his intention to supply refreshments in. the news-room. The establishment is open until ten o'clock in the evening, and an opportunity will be thus afforded to | sharebrokers and others to transact a little business after office hours. In these times of "scrip" there is no doubt that the man who wants to sell, or the man who wants to buy, does nob discontinue his search for a customer a3 soon as office hours are closed ; and the news-room will be found a most convenient place for the consummation of bargains, and a more desirable one than an hotel. Telegraph forms, stamps, blank cheques, and every facility for the transaction of business are obtainable ; and the clerk in charge is a gentleman who, from his known urbanity and politeness, is sure to give evary satisfaction to subscribers. The subscription fee i« one shilling per month, an amount surprisingly small considering the many advantages attaching to membership. We have no doubt the public will support Mr. Haley in his praiseworthy endeavours te establish an institution which, if encouraged, will be a credit to the place and a boon to its inhabitants.
