THE NEW ARCHBISHOP OF PARIS.

We have been requested to republish the following letter from yesterday's Thames Advertiser : — " Sir,— l see a paragraph in this morning's Advertiser beaded ' The New Archbishop of Paris;' and, as it had previously appeared in an evening contemporary, I begin somehow | to think that a sinister significance may be attached to it. "With the biographical portion of the paragraph in question I hate no manner of concern, though I know it to be incorrect in certain particulars ; but, when it comes to say that Bishop Dupanloup is (or has been) ' a fierce opponent of Ultramontanism,' I must meet the statement with a most unqualified contradiction. Of all the Bishops in the Church, I believe there is not one more thoroughly devoted to the See of Rome than Felix, Bishop of Orleans ; nor is there one who has striven against its enemies with more persistent zeal, energy, and success. " The students of his diocese were never forbidden, as alleged, to subscribe to the Univers. That occurred, I am aware, in another diocese of France, but not in Orleans ; and, as to h>s having been the ' ablest remonstrant against Papal Infallibility,' so far from that being the fact, that he never expressed even a doubt on the matter, but, in common with the other prelates of the Council, had always accepted it as an important portion of Catholic teaching. He deemed it inexpedient, it is true, to have it formally defined, and worked with characteristic vigour to prevent it ; but he was amongst the foremost to accept the decree the day after it was passed, and would forfeit his life this moment rather than doubt about or dispute it. " These facts may not have much interest for the majority of your readers ; but it is proper at all times to assert the truth as well in the minutest affairs as in matters of the utmost magnitude. — I am, &c, " + T. W. Oroke, ■ " Bishop of Auckland. " The Presbytery, fthortiand, "July 29, 1871." '
