THE WAIKATO RAILWAY.
On Sunday evening Mn^Sitigg returned to town from superintending the survey of the divergence of the Waikato railway to Mercer. The survey has been considerably retarded owing to the late severe weather, many days being so stormy thairtbe pw'ty could not use a levelling instrument. However it is satiafaptory to know that the line is thoroughly practicable, and that Mercer will be the terminal station. In the course of three weeks the complete survey will be finished by the large party now at work. We understand that the line, after it leaves Drury, sweeps down through Pukekohe, passes through Mr. Buckland's and Mr. C. Harris's property, crosses within about a mile and a half of the centre of the Tuakau settlement, runs up within a short distance of Mr. Corbet's house on the hill above Pokeno settlement, and thence aloug the level ground on the weat side of the South Road, past the Pokeno settlement, and passing within a short distance of the hotel at Pokeno, and so on to Mercer. The line as altered is giving universal satisfaction to the settlers along the whole route, and in all the contiguous settlements. We understand that all land in the neighbourhood of the line that was open for sale was finally withdrawn yesterday, and thus many a land-speculating scheme has been wisely cut short. It is a pleasure to know that the landowners all along the line have' cheerfully given the necessary land, free of cost, to the Government, with one exception. We withhold the objector's name at present, feeling sure that the force of public opinion amongst his fellow-settlers will shame him out of his singular position. Mr. Wrigg returns again on Wednesday to continue the superintendence of the survey.
