NEWTON.

The annual me* ting of, the ratepayers of the Newton Highway District was held yesterday in the Newton Hotel, at Ik o'clock. There was but a small 'attendance ; Mr. George Wilson in the chair. The advertisement calling the meeting was read, after which Mr. William Bridson and Mr. P. Dignan were appointed auditors to examine the accounts. The treasurer's statement showed that the total receipts for the year were! £166 11s. 6d., and the total expenditure was, up to the end of June, £162 9a. 10d., leaving a balance of £4 Xu. Bd> on hand, but since which time several items had been paid t'otculverta, to. On the 30th June, 1870, there was due for arrears of rates, extendiug over the last three years, a sum of £16 10s. lid., but since then several of these items had been paid, aad the balance of unpaid rates now due was £13 16s. 7d. The district had raised within itself £136 7s. 9d., and had received from the Government £30 3s. 9d. during the past year. — Mr. Jones moved that the kind of rate struck be on the value to sell, which was seconded by Mr. Mr. McNair, and agreed to. — Mr. Thomas Faulder moved that the rate be 3d. per pound. — Mr. Bridson seconded. — Mr. McNair moved that the rate be in the pound. — Mr. Motion moved a further amendment that the rate be £d. in the pound, value to sell. — la~ favour of the <^d. rate thero were 13 votes recorded, and 9 votes for the fd. in the pound. — Mr. Faulder having withdrawn hia motion in favour of a 3d. rate, the id. rate was therefore declared carried. — Mr. Faulder stated that the last trustees had done theiv duty well, and moved that the outgoing trustees be re-elected ia a body. — Messrs. Wilson, Motion, McNair, Reid, and Jones were thereforetmanimously re-elected. — The clause of the Act with reference to statute labour was read, but no motion was agreed to. — On the motion of Mr. Faulder, a vote of thanks to the Chairman waß unanimously agreed to, after which th« meeting separated.
