COLONIAL PRIZE-FIRING.

The firing for the Colonial prizes was resumed yesterday at One-tree Hill. Ifc was feared on the previous evening that the weather would be such a 9 to necessitate a cessation of firino: for a day, aud, when the raou mustered at 8 o'clock at the Drill-shed, there wore still fears as to the success of the day's shooting. They had hardly gob seated iii the traps, however, before the sun shone out, aud the threatening clouds rapidly dispersed, and, by the time the ground was reached, xU doubts were at an end as to the atate of the weathei\ Tho same officers were j> resen t as on the previous day, except that Dr. Hooper was tho medical officer in attendance, and that Lieutenant Somerville, Lieutenant Whitson, Cornet May, and Ensign Hassan were the officers in change .it the Butts. Notwithstanding that Mr. Crowther was running his 'buses from town duriug the day, the attendance was little batter than on the first day. It will be seen that the firing continues to be first-class, and also that the best shooting is being made by Southern men, and more particularly by those from Otago. It must be borne in mind, in connection with this circumstance, that Otago by a long way sends a larger number of representatives than any other province, and that there greater facilities arc afforded to the men for practu* ing. Auckland did not secure a single prize yesterday, aud throughout the shooting her representatives were in the back-gronnd. Tluee sets of prizes were fired for. The first consisted of the Ist stage of the 3rd sefc, the 2nd of the 2nd stage, and the 3rd of the 4th set. In the Ist stage of the 3rd set the necessary number of points to secure a prize was fixed at 30, and the highest score made was only 28, so that in that set no prizes will be awarded. It was remarked by many of the competitors that, considering the size of the bull's eye (Sin. square) and the centre, 30 points was rather too high at which to fix the qualification. It was necessary also, in firing tor that set for competition, to score 25 in order to qualify for the next stage. Thirteen only succeeded in obtaining the nocessaiy number, and in filing in the 2nd stage at 400, 500, and 600 yards, they made some really splendid shooting ; the average was. 37 points. Captain Wood, of Wellington, made the top score of 16. It will be scon that in the 4th set the size of the target was lessened, which will account for the apparent bad scoring. Douglas, of Otago, headed tlie score with 39. Lady Bowen drove on the range about half - past four o'clock, and remained watching the filing with great interest until the close. We believe her ladyship will again visit the range on Saturday, wheu it is expected that a large number of visitors will be present. To-day we understand there will bo a half -holiday in the General Government offices, in order that tho officials may have a,u opportunity of witnessing some of the matches ; and it is also arranged that tho Volunteer band should^ be in attendance on the ground. We append the scores for yesterday's shooting : — Tiiikd Sur — Volunteer Phizes iy two Stacks : Oi>en to Members o*' VoLUsrmui Coni'S Ovly.— First Sta' n 'c : Jlangc3, 200 and 300 yaids ; five (5) shots afc each range ; position, standing.
