POLICE COURT.—Wednesday. [Before H. H. Turton and J. M. Dargaville, Esqs., J.P.s.]
Drunkenness. — Jeremiah Allen, Elizabeth Lynch, and Henry Welsh were each fined ss. and costs, or suffer 24 hours' imprisonment. Ellen McLean, for a second offence, was fined 203. and costs, or 48 hours' imprisonment. Vagrancy. — Ellen McLean was found guilby of being a vagrant, and was sentenced to three months' imprisonment. Larceny. — Edward Jones was charged by A,. Paulkener with stealing two pairs of trousers from his dwelling-house on the 16th December, IS7O. — Agnes Faulkener, Albertstreet, deposed that the trousers produced wore those stolen from thoir house on the 16th of la3t month. — An assistant in the pawnshop of Messrs. Moses and Neumegen proved that prisoner pawned the trousers with them ; that he gave his name as Jones, and said he lived in Grey-street. He identified the pawn-ticket produced as the ticket. \ie iss\xa& topvisoTieT~wkeTittieiErc>"asBTS were pawned. — Detective Ternahan deposed to having received the trousers produced from, last witness, and to finding the pawnticket upon the prisoner,— The sameprisoner was then charged with having stolen 7s. lOd. from the house o£ John Savory in Edwirdes<?fcreet, on Saturday last, Mr. Inspector Broham withdrew this charge, there not being sufficient evidence to support it. — On the first charge the Bench found prisoner guilty.land sentenced him to four months' itaprisanowcU; with, hard labour. .Robbery from a Dwelling-house, — Roberfc Leary was charged by Henry Scimmacker with having stolen wearing apparel to the amount of £10 from his dwelling-house, in Mount-street, between the 16th and 18th instant.— Prisoner pleaded not guilty. —Mr. Inspector Broham conducted the prosecution. —Harry Schumacker stated that he was a manner, and left bis house on the 16th. 5e5 e locked the door, and nailed tho "windows down. When he returned home on the 18th he found the idoor burst open. The blankets were stopped off the bed, and the clothes taken out of his box. shirts, vests, 800k8,&3.,in all worth £10. He identified a number of articles prdduced by Detective Ternahan. — Constable Molloy, stationed at Otahuhu, deposed to having arrested the prisoner at Otahuhu on the 19tE instant. The prisoner had a large bag, and in consequence of his previous knowledge o£ the prisoner he searched the bag. It contained the articles produced, save the Crimean shirt and boots. These articles ho afterwards learned prisoner had sold in Otahuhu to a man living some eight miles out of that village. Prisoner informed him ho had bought the a* tides tka day previously, and paid for them honestly, — Detective Ternahan deposed that he had a conversation with prisoner about the articles produced. Prisoner told him he saw aman " plant " them, and prisoner afterwards went and "sprung the plant."^ The man, he said, was a stranger to him.— Prisoner was fully committed to take his trial. Larceny. — John Clune was charged by John Joss with having stolen from him gum and clothing worth £1 15s. 7d., on the 26th November, 1870. — Prisoner pleaded not guilty. — On the request of Inspector Broham the case was remanded until Friday. Arrears of City Ratbs.— F, H. White was charged by J. W. Diddams with having neglected to pay £4 10s., city rates due. No appearance of defendant. — Judgment for plaintiff.
