THAMES ELECTION : POLLINGDAY.
There was a striking illustration at the Thames to-day of the purposes for which the system of voting by ballot was introduced. Perfect order was maintained during the day. Inside the polling-booth the ballot machinery worked smoothly enough, thanks in great measure to the < fficient arrangements made by the returning officer, Mr. Durbridge. I heard of one or two attempts at personation, but one of the offendiug parties is likely to get into trouble therefrom. Of course there was no arriving at any conclusion during the day as to the state of the poll. It was a qukt electiou, and ha? involved but a. very small outlay o£ ot money on either aide. The poll closed at 4 o'clock.— .(.The result appears in a telegram
