HASTINGS (TAPU CREEK). HEAVY FIND OF ALLUVIAL GOLD. April 12.
Considerable excitement prevailed here m consequence of some reported heavy finds of alluvial gold up the Mata Creek, four or five mile 3 up, in one of the tributaries to the main creek. Several of the old claims are again at work ; amongst others are ike Californian, the Lady Bowen, the Star of the Hast, th.c Little Clara, and the Little Republic. Tho engine and boiler belonging to the United Engineers' machine have been moved from thia plaoo to Auckland, in order to be erected at the maimfacfcory of Messrs, Cousins and Atkin. The Full Moon shaft is now upwards of 100 feet from the surface ; only four men are at woi'k. The Little Jessie Claim ia once more at work ; so is the Half Moon. The Californian is still driving, and ihe little Repiiblic, Morning Light, and Golden Spur ai/e taking out stuff for crushing. Buckland's machine is still crushing fpr the Tapu Goldmiuing Company, and Rattray'a machine is about to commence.
