The 'Ihatnea Adveriise.r of Monday haa the following : — "A gentleman who readied Shortland yesterday, overland from Tauranga, furnishes us with the following new s ; — On the night of the 24th of April, Colonel St. 3ohn and William Marsh, of the Avawas, with sitty me >, advanced on Tamaikowa's position at Whakarae, beyond Ohiwha, but failed to mirprise him. On entering the pa, it was found rleaarfced hy all exoept an old man named Tipene. of the Upokoiohe tube, who was msfcmf-ly killed. A parby of natives discovered the trail o£ a large part}' of the enemy last week, between Mount Edgecombe and Tanaroa. Iho olijeet of the enemy is not known. .fter travelling up the plain about twenty miles, the trail turned into the Ure■wera mountains at Tauaroi. f^j? of the enemy's scouts were pursued by onr man, The horses were taken, but the n\tive-s escaped by dismounting aud taking to the bush. Te Kooti's whereabouts i^ noi known."
