PROPOSED EXTENSION OF GRAHAMSTOWN WHARF.

His Honor the Superintendent has replied as follows to the memorial which we published last week, relative to the proposed extension of the Grahamstown wharf :—"Superintendent's office, Auckland, March 23, 1870.— Gentlemen,. — In reply to the queries contained in your letter of the lltn instant, I have to state :— 1. That the extension of the present Grahamstown wharf does not meet the unqualified approval of the Government, inasmuch as the cost of the extension would be in excess of the advantages to be gained. An extension of even 1,000 feet would not enable steamers to come alongside at all times of the time, and would, as I am informed, only give about two feet greater depth of water than at present. The extension would, if done in a substantial manner, cost much over£l,ooo. 2. If private parties desiring the extension are willing to unaertake it, the Government will supplement their expenditure to the extent of one-half the net proceeds of the tolls for the remainder of the year. 3. The Government will not itself undertake the extension. 4. The Government will be open to consider any offers by private persons to undertake the extension, based on receiving a proportion of the tolls for a given time. I would further state that the Government are endeavouring to enter into arrangements with persons willing to erect a deep-water wharf at Tararu, where vessels could come alongside at all times of tide, and to carry an iron tramway from thence to Grahamstown and Shortland. By this mode the Government believe that greater advantages could be secured at less cost than in any other way.-— I am, &c, Teiomas B. Gillies, Superintendent. — To Messrs. J. Styak, W. Lloyd, and 0. A. Robertson, Grahamstown."
