THE MAIN SEWER NUISANCE.
Yesterday afternoon Dr. Nicholson, Provincial Secretary, accompanied by Mr. Allwright, Inspector of Works, paid a visit of inspection to the intake, for the purpose of ascertaining what could be done to remove the nuisance complained of by the deputation on JSatmday last. The mamjs^wer itself was found to be quite clear, tse nuisance being caused by tha deposit further out in the harbour. This is caused, as explained by the deputation, by an accumulation of chips and rubbish, which prevents the effectual clearing of the place by the tide. From the estimates which have been sent in to the Provincial Government, it has been shown that a dredge would cost at least £3,000, while tv construct permanent works to carry the nuisance out into the harbour would involve an outlay of at least t 20,000. This expenditure is of course quite out of the question, but we understand that the Provincial Government will do what is possible to abate the nuisance complained of.
