THE COLLISION AT WHANGA. POUA.
A correspondent furnishes us with the following further particulars of the collision between Maoris and Europeans at Whangapoua, A number of logs belonging t Mr. Craig were lying in the Opitanui Creek, on land now belonging to Mr. Harris, jun. They were scattered along the creek, but out of the current, and it was therefore necessary to have them "jacked in," so that when a flood occurred they might be floated to the booms. A party of tour men were sent to perform this work. They had not been long at their labours before nine men in the employ of Mr. Harris, jun., attempted to drive the jackers off, but did not succeed, and the party were left at work. A few days afterward. 9, early in ihe naorning, seventeen or eighteen Maoris, accompanied by a European appeared ou the ground, armed with bludgeons, the European having a revolver. One of the jacks was secured, as the men had not at that time commenced work. The Maoris afterwards pi oceeded fin ther up the ci'eeks to McLellan's hut (contractor), where they secured his tools, little or no lesistance being offered. As the Maoris were proceeding down the creek with the tools they espied some of the Europeans carrying away their jacks, and they attem ted to secure these also. One of the men resisted for some time, until he was struck with a caulking mallet over the eye, and cut severely. Another was threatened to be tied hand-and-foot and thrown into the creek.
