PROPOSED GLASS MANUFACTORY IN AUCKLAND.

THE establishment of a new industry in a colony is a thing most worthy of record and of encouragement ; and iUcklanclers generally -vyill be glad to learn that there is a probability of a glass manufactory being established in or near the city. An applicahas been made to the Superintendent for the use of a piece of ground as a site for a glass nianufactoiy ; the applicant being a practical glass-blower and cutter, who has worked m Newcastlc-npon-Tyne and also in Sydney. He has occupied himself during odd evenings in the making of cupolas ; he has also ordered the necessary fire-bricks, for a furnace,- and lie is ready to commence, with the least delay possible, the blowing of ordinary decanters, tumblers, &c , lampshades and glasses, and other things much in use, and bulky and risky as imports. The production of cut glass is a branch of the trade the establishment of which would I depend upon successful results in the other branch. The applicant has made glass in Sydney, from New Zealand sand; and knows, therefoie, that there is no lisk as to obtaining material. The sand is piocurable at Whangarei or Bay of Islands ; but the applicant prefers to bring material to the place where he hopes for trade in the products of his labour, rather than to labour where his material is at hand, and then have to ship his products to market. The .Superintendent L.is le^ueslcd the applicant to look lound tho city and neighbourhood ; and has ansmod him that if lie finds a (Joveinmcnt reserve, pii t of which will answer his purpose, tho (io\ eminent will be ready to give him a long leabe at a purely nominal rent. We are bine that people' gcneially will hope that his Honor may shoitly be called upon to pci form his promise as to tho lease ; and that the applicant will soon theieafter estabh&h a payable business.
