POLICE COURT.— Wednesday, (Before T. Beckham, Esq., R.M.)
Drunken-ness. — Matthew Whitelow was fined for this offence 20s. and costs ; Jame? Smith, os. and costs ; and a Maori, whose name sounded like " Whitepotato," who was charged for being drunk, cud not appear when called on, and his bail in consequence was ordered to be forfeited. Desertion. — John Kavanagh, a deserter from H.M. 18th Regiment, 2nd Battalion, was handed over to the military authorities. Master and Apprentice. — William Bowden was charged with absenting himself from the employment of his masters, Messrs. Cousins and Co., coachbuilders. — Mr. Sheehan, who appeared for the prosecution, said that, as the prisoner had expressed contrition, they would be satisfied with the severe lecture that the Banch had administered. The prisoner was then discharged on payment of costs, and with a recommendation from the Bench to the prisoner's father to give him a sound birching.
