WHANGANUI.

A branch of the Bank of Australasia is to be opened here in a few weeks, in those central premises in the Victoria Avenue belonging to Mr. J. A. Burnett. Mr. McNeill has commenced preliminary operations, and the erection of the bridge | will now be pushed on as rapidly as cir. cumatances will admit of. An accident happened to Mr. J. Whitaker, one of the Lancashire bell-ringers, while the company were proceeding to Tura« kina in Mr. Braithwaite'a trap. One of the leaders had been swerving a good deal from the time of starting, and when about a mile fromWangaehu the' beast turned nearly right round, Mr. Eastwood leaped out to get hold of its head, and Mr. Whitaker also attempted to get out, but in doing ao disolocated and wrenched his arm, causing him acute pain. Fortunately Dr. Curl happened to be a little way behind the trap, and on his coming up the arm was set : but as the services of Mr. Whitaker were indis. pensable at Turakina, if there was to be aa entertainment there, and he was clearly in« capable of any exertion, there was nothing for it but to return to town. And thus it happened that the concert advertised did not come off. A native report reached here on Tuesday last that Te Kooti a few days since entered akainga, near Mangafcautari, and killed most of the women and children in it, th© men being absent. The murdered people belonged. to tha Ngatiraukawu hapu. This deed has added, it is believed, this hapu to the list of Te Kooti's pursuers.
