CAMBRIDGE. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT. ) October 26.
The Resident Magistrate heM the usual monthly Court here on Wednesday last. John Wilson, ifaq., J.P., also occurred a aeafc on the bench, Iheie were only three cases adjudicated on, viz :—: — Mann v. Henson. — Ckim, £2 10s., tbe value of certain implements, the property of plaintiff, letained by defendant. Verdict fcr plaint" ff.
Henson v. Mann. — The plaintiff claimed £10 as damages for a breach of contract on the part of the defendant through his negWting to clear a certain quantity of land. The plaintiff produced a written asr^menl, signed by Mann, dated in Augu t, IS6B. The Btsnch decided that the agreement was iuvaliil, as it did not bear a stamp, and observed that in itf opinion the action was token in const quence of the pieceding one, sincn the date of the aeivement showed that the damage, if any, could havp foeeu recoveied long a«o.
R. Kirkwood v. Bobinsoh. — 1 his was a claim for £17 10s , £7 10s. being the retail value uf a ca«k of alp, the remaining £10 being for loss of trade nnd custom. Judgment for plaintiff for £7 10s. and coats, tbe Bench refusing to consider the question of damages on account of the plaintiff having, in his letter to defendant, offered ta condone the matter for the price of the ale, afe ss. 4d. per gallon.
On the same evening a lecture, on the principle 1 * of the United Kingdom Allianr-*, was given in the Wesley an Chapel. The lecturer, after explaining the objects mid mcoe of working of the Alliance, read a number cf statistics, and, if I may be aIL-wpd the f-x-prt-Ssion, probable or possible statistics, which were supposed to prove that the eld country lo^es a fearful amount of millions of pounds sterling yearly by the pi-od'iction and ccasumption of fermented and f!i<tilled liquors At the close of the lecture, it was attemi ted to get up a disoussion or conversation on the subject. The chairman (Rev. Mr. Symmonds) then proposed the following resolution :—": — " That this meeting approves of, the principles of the United Kingdom Alliance, and pledges itself to use every means in its power to carry them out." After waiting for some minutes, And finding that the motion was not seconded, the rev. chairman then called upon those in favour of the proposition to hold up their bands ; but, horresco refe ren«, not one .solitary hand was elevated. Those who were of the contrary opinion were then requested "to signify the same in »he usual manner. " The people of Cambridge, however, knowing too well what is required by politeness and good manners, oould not so far hurt the feelings of tbe gentleman who had come so far to tell them what he considered was for their good, as to give a pointblank contradiction to the correctness of bis views, and very properly kept their bauds down. I am afraid we do not appreciate "Permissive Prohibition." A hiatus valde deflendus in our soci>»l microcosm baa been filled by the appointment of Mr. E. Clarke as district teacher, who yesterday opened bis school in a large room in Mr. W. Buokland'-s house, which that gentleman has most generously placed at tbe disposal of the School Committee, until & school-house bo built. Tbe same gentleman has also given the teacher accommodation in his residence, I may mention that the School Committee, and the settlers generally, feel grateful to the Educational Board for the liberality with which it has treated them, and for the interest it has taken in the establishment of a school in thii district.
A big fellow who went into one of fcho,>e dollar htores in P. — where they sell nuy article within the walla for that sum— pounced on the store for his dollar's worth, and would not relinquish his claim until they paid him 4<iol A young lady of Logan county, Kentucky, advertises for ''sealed tenders for the hand and heart." Even Frenchwomen are disagreeable to one another. Only the other day two "dearest friends" were in conversation. "My dear," said the eldest, "do you know that your husband told me last night that my oheeks were like roses?" "Yea, love, I know he did. He spoke of it afterwards, and said ib was a. ' pity they were yellow rows. ' . '
