THE SUPERINTENDENCY.
To the Editor of the L'aixy Southern Cross and Weekly News. Sir, — It must be patent to everyone who haswatched the course of events for the last two or three years, especially the attempt to pass the Rural Districts Bill («n Act that would have spread ruin and devastation throughout the country settlements), that a great battle has to be fought between the country settlers, the pioneers of civilisation, on the one parr, and those of the land-speculating community who are determined to haveour provincial statutes altered to suit their interests, and thus add to the burdens already breaking the camel's back. I would ask, are steps being taken to successfully fight that, battle? Ifc is the opinion of some that the candidates for the Superintendence should be pledged to the &lli»noe voluntary or Permissive Act. To such I would appeal.that in a case like the present, when the vitality of many of the country districts is at stake, they should let nothing come between the country settlers and a change ia the administration of our provincial affair 1 ). Dr. Pollen's clear views «f the present requirements of the out-districta seem to indicate that he Vi the man who should lead us to work out free institutions for ourselve", and as that can only be accomplished by united action, and to those who say they will not support any candidate unless he will pledge himself to their particular views, [ would respectfully remind them that by bo doing they will not only injure their own cause, but tMe provinea aa wll. I wool I respectfully suggest that the various country districts take the matter up, and act ia unison, for tj the want of unity we caa attribute many of our present eviia. J. M. MUBRAT.
