SYDNEY.
The Empire, of July 20 reports :— The setting in of heavy raina yesterday brought busineis Jto a standstill. At the mills, flour haa ; scarcely been inquired for at even last week's rates. The quotations are £13 10s to £14 for best Adelaide. Adelaide wheat, s<j 9d. There is every probability of these prices being maintained if no other shipments from California arrive. In all other articles prices are unchanged, with literally nothing doing. The same paper of the 17th eaya :— The Stock and Share market continues moderately active. Joint Stock Batik are firm at 10a cum div., City at 12J, and New Zealand at 17- Now South Wales have found buyers at 42. A company, with a capital of £36,000, has been ' started in this city to (work some of tke recently discovered quartz reefs at Turnkey Creek. Only 12,000 shares of £1 each are\offered to the public, and upon then* it is intended to pay dividends on the full amount of the share, irrespective of what may have been called up thareon. The weekly produce sales, held to-day, were ell attended, and, up to a certain limit, biddings were animated, especially for shipping parcels of tallow, which brought last week's quotations. Prices for inferior lots showed a slight decline. A few small lots of extra weight hides were taken by the trade at full rates, but all other descriptions exhibited a falling market. Horsehides were quitted at 3s 3d to 3s 9d : calfskins at lid to 3s 3d. Since the departure of tho mail there has been a slight domaud for country orders, but the state of the import markets cannot be considered as showing any material improvement. The most noticeable transaction hag been the sale to-day, by Messrs. Stubbs and Co., of the cargo of Bourbon sugars, ex ' Ozanum. 1 The bulk of the samples were ration and low counters, of which the trade were almost out of stock, and therefore bought freely at prices satisfactory to importers. Low ration realised £26 15s to £28 ; medium to good, £29 103 .to £31 103 ; brown counter, £32 to £33 17a 6d ; yellow, £34 to £36 ss. A shipment of damaged currants, realised 3d, and damaged muscatels 5Jd, net cash, The sale of the flour, ex « Freetrader,' has caused a better feeling on the part of holders of breadstuffr, whojlook for an advance in prices unless other cargoes than the one adviied cume forward from California. Adelaide flour is still quoted at £13 to £14 ; wheat, 5s 9d. There is more inquiry for teas, and. a few trade lota have changed hands during the week on private terms. The demand for liquors continues light, and only for small lots required for present use. Bulk ale, of best brands, is obtainable at late rates; £6 5s has been accepted for a good second br*nd. Holders of bottled are not forcing sales, as it would be difficult to place a parcel, except at a low figure. Rum has a downward tendency; 3s 7d to 3s 9d is named for parcels, A line of best brands was quitted at the Uwer price. The brandy market ia fully stocked. 7a 9d ia only obtainable for small quantities ; other lots may be had at 7s 6d upwards. Case brandies are difficult to move. In dried fruits we notice a slight improvement in currants. Holders of prime fruit ask an eighth to a farthing advao.ee on last week's quotations,
