THE TRAMWAYS.

The work of surveying for the tramways to be constructed along the creeks and between Tararu and Shortland pier has been commenced in earnest, under the direction of the Engineer-in-Chief, Mr. Charles O'Neill. Surveyors were at work yesterday along the Moanat&iari and Tararu Greeks, taking the levels of the proposed lines of route. The tramway to be first erected is, we believe, to extend from the head of the Tavaru, &t the head of ths Wild Missouri Claim, passing the foot of Tinker's Gully and the Ballarai; Kohinoor Claim. From thence it will be continued on to the main rails, the Utter extending almost in a straight line to the Kuranui Creek. The main dine will be taken along the beach to the Graham's Town and Shortland piers. The first cargo of sleepers from Onebung» was received on Thursday in the cutter ' Forth,' ami discharged at Tararu Point for use »t the Tararu branch of the tramway. It is intended to discharge the material a* jit i* received at various points nearest the ' creek for which it is required, in order to economise the exp -use of oartinc. As far as possible the works are to be let by tender, and every effort will be put forth to expedite the work, in order that the "whole may be completed before the close of the present; summer season. A , considerable outlay will be involved^ la addition to the Engineer-in-Chief, there are sever J assistants,-foremen of works, &c. j and a perfect army of surveyors are being organ i«ed to proceed with the preliminary surveys without delay. We might suggest that the branch tramways along ths creeks should be proceeded with first, in order that they may be made serviceable before the winter season sets in. There are differences oh opirtion as to the utility of the gauge to be rued for tramways. Thpre can, be no doubt that a narrow gauge. ;Would be found much mora serviceable along the creeks, and, indeed, we very much question the possibility of placing the broad-gauge iine along certain parts of the very diiQouk localities to. bo
