LUOSO, NON URO.

If I h»T« b«en oxttiseaUbod, y«t thoro tin* A U'Oiuund btaaoaa from the npatt I boi«.

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 20.

We are compelled to exclude our leading article, in order to make room for local and summary matter.

The letter of our own correspondent from Napier is, vre fear, pretty conclusive on one point, namely, that there is now but little hope that the M aoris who escaped from the Chatham Islands will settle down quietly. Since the repulse of Colonel Whilmore's force, up till this time, they had committed no depredation, and it was hoped that they would not do anything to bring war on the East Coast. This was, of course, doubly desirable, in view of the state of affairs in the Patea district. There can be no doubt .now, however, that the ex-prisoners have determined on war— very likely with the concurrence and aid of the Urewera tribes. They have come down nearer the settled district in the Wairoa, and joined themselves to the disaffected natives at Whataroa. Their first exploit has been the capturing and killing of a scouting party of ten natives that had been sent out by the Resident Magistrate. The leader of this party is called Jlaraitiana, but perhaps he is not the famous Earaitiana of the Napier district. The blockhouse at Clyde, on the Wairoa, has been occupied by Captain Take and his men, but they are too few to do more than act on the defensive ; and we fear that the Wairoa district, which has made considerable progress within the last few years, will he utterly ruined.
