MINING MATTERS.
The Hand-in-Haud Claim has been successful in obtaining the famous leader of the Middle Star, •which has proved so remunerative to the lucky party holding the latter claim. Some magnificent specimens were taken out of the leader opened yesterday. The Long Drive Company's Claim has taken out 801b. of splendid specimen stone this week, which will serve materially to augment the proceeds of the next crushing. The Wade Claim, on the Waiotahi, struck a very rich leader five inches thick on Wednesday, and. took out some excellent gold- bearing specimens. A rush has taken place this week to unoccupied ground, about a mile from the Lucky- Hit Claim, in consequence of several excellent prospects having been obtained in that locality, An esteemed correspondent sends us the following as the remit of a vi-«it to the Waiotabi : — Of the different claims we visited, wish none were we better satisfied than the " He»r Naught." This claim is situated nearly at the top of the Waiotahi Creek, and has been wrought for the last eleven months. It is quite in the centre of claims turning out rich stuff. As yet they bare had little crushing, but what they have had crush* d h*a yielded handsomely. From 1001b. of specimens, 46»z. of gold were extracted, and the last crushing — 16 tons — which was made at Messrs. Hamlin and Stevens's machine, yielded at the rate of soz. to the ton. Fortunately for the shareholders in this claim, they have now the immediate prospect of a quick return. They have formed themselves into a company under the Limited Liability Act, and made arrangements whereby the machine of Messrs. Hamlin and Co. will become the property of the company. It is expected that this machine will be able to crush about forty tons per week. We were kindly shown over the claim by one of the shareholders, and were glad to see that it was being worked iu a very satisfactory manner. Five miners were engaged in taking Hown a face sixteen feet high and about eighteen feet broad. In this face »re a number of splendid gold-bearing leaders, from which we saw some beautiful specimens, thoroughly impregnated with gold, taken. The five men who are at present employed can turn out about three tons of quartz per day, but they have no doubt that, with the additional hands which they intend shortly to engage, they will be enabled to keep their machine working night and day.
