AUCKLAND CALEDONIAN CLUB.
A meeting of persons interested ia the formation of a Caledonian Club was convened to be held in tho Star Hotel, Albert-street, last eveniug. A.bout a dozen gentlemen a-.tendcd, Mr. Matthew W hitelaw iv the chair. The Chairman' made a few remarks iv reference to the object for which they had met, and said he was glad to see Mr. McLeod, a gentl-min of considerable experience vn the management of Caledonian Clubs, present that eveuins, who would perhap3 oblige th m with a few hints which might prove useful. Mr. MoLe -d said ho was much I'mppoiuted to see so few ] .e^ent that eveniug, bvit lie believed they all bud the cuise at heart-, and he had no do'iUfc they would suoc~e>l in accomplishing the work they "had undertaken. He had been call < upon to relata some of bis experience- in-ttdin tuu%b, and, *ltho i^h he"dul not wish to tfrke credit for knowledge he did not posses^, be had been connected with Caledonian Clubs for many yea;\s, _ .being the originator of the firat e-üblisbed Highland Club in the city of Edinburgh ; and he would be mosi happy to afford ihem all tho assistance in h s power. He did not alvocacetbe founation of a society of that character from any party motive*, but th night it would be a source of great gratification t) the natives of Scotland to have their old sjortsand pastimes carted on in the land of their adopt o i. Mr. \Vhitei.aw, jun., proposed, "That a Celedonian Club b« fomied." The motion was seconded by Mr. McPuerson', and carried unanimously. On the motion of Mr. Murray, seconded by Mr. RITCHIB, tho following gentleman were .appointed a committee to diaw up rales for the guidance of the club, 't be Bii>>m tted for approval at the next mreting ; — Mcssn WluteUw, McPherson, \hllur, Maclonald, McLod, Beverit'go, VVhitson, Maoffirlane, Simrt, Ritchie (secretary), Mcßae, John S lleid Swan«on Miceidy, Wii-ht, Whitelaw, jun., G oigy Clarkson, and Murray, with power to add to their number ; five members of committ c to f'>rm a quorum. A vote of thanks was accor.led to the Chairman, and the meeting separated.
