THAMES GOLDFIELDS. (FROM THE "THAMES ADVERTISER," JULY 9)

Yesterday morning early a severe storm swept over the township, and continued with more or less violence for several hours. The wind raged at times with hurricane force, and carried before it a number of frail canvas habitations, to the no small consternation of the occupants. The chimney of an addition to the Thames Hotel was blown down, and in its fall caused the rafters of the building to give way, and carried away the front. Fortunately, the early hour at which it occurred prevented any injury to pedeitriana. A nother wooden building going up was blown down ; but beyond these we have not heard of any disasters resulting from the force of the gale. The sea continued high all day, although the wind moderated after blowing a few hours. The little steamer « Maori Chief ' was unable to get out to meet the Auckland steamers, owing to the heavy sea on. The p.s. ' Clyde,' however, accomplished the task very comfortably. » A meeting has been convened, to be held at Uutt s Theatre, at two o'clock on Saturday afternoon, to take steps towards celebrating the first anniversary of this goldfield in a becoming manner; We have no doubt the objecb will meet that support it merits at the hands of the miners, and that the\ celebration of so important an event will be carried out with the spirit and energy characteristic of this Community. The erection of a bridge over the Ka>aka Creek w contemplated by the residents at Waiofcahi, and a public meeting of those interested bas bepn convened to be held at the Royal Hotel at seven jo clock this evening. It is likewise proposed to forrfi the beach ,road. This is a step in the right direution— an example worthy of imitation elsewhere. / The New bouth Wale* temi^orary /branch bank has been opened for the transaction it business at the corner of Pollen «nd Richmond -greets, pending the completion of thtir new premise/ now in course of erection. *
