DESTITUTION IN NEW YORK, (FROM THE "NEW YORK WORLD," FEBRUARY 16.)
From tbe January report; of the Association for Improving the Condition of the Poor, we learn that the past month was one of great suffering, there having been greater destitution than at any period •0 limited a'mce the winter of 1854. There ia no exaggeration in the statement that there are thousands of families in this city, usually ■elf-supporting — including men women, and helpless children — who, if left to themselves, unaided, are in danger of freezing or starvation. The number of persons now assisted by the Association who have been reduced to beggary by failure of employment nearly equals the destitution of the memorable winter of '54 and '55. It is said that there is not a vessel building in this city. Journeymen are difcbarged from the closing of foundries, factories, yards, and workshops. Sailors are without ships ; porters an i clerks without places ; labourers unemployed ; and female employs and semng girls without work. Compared with the past winter there has also been a decrease of receipts, amounting to 5,411 dollars Tbe number of persons assisted during the month w«s 17,781, and the number of visits reported were 8 712. The wards in nhich there appears to be the greatest destitution are the Fifth, Eighth, Eleventh, and Seventeenth.
