POLICE COURT.— Monday. [Before T. Beckham, Esq., R.M.]

DRUNKENNESS. Eoberfc Oroni, Robert McMullin, Michael Sheas, and Thomas Brown were severally punished for this offence.

Li.BCENIBS. George Wilson was charged with stealing a sovereign from the shop of James Eosie, grocer, Drake-street. The prosecutor deposed that the accused came into his shop on Saturday morning last, and while there he observed him take a sovereign from the till. He ran off, and the prosecutor followed him, but was unable to capture him. The prosecutor gave information to the police. Detective Ternahan deposed that he arrested the prisoner on Queen-street Wharf on Saturday. He found 10s. 3£d. upon him, also a pair of new boots, and a pair of socks. Witness ascertained that the prisoner bought the boots for 7s. Mr. Commissioner Nanghton observed that the prisoner was a very notorious character ; his conduct was not only bad without, but within the prison, havingbeen put forthe greater part of his last sentence in solitary confinement. The prisoner was sentenced to six calendar months' imprisonment with hard labour. John Tackabury, a hairdresser, was charged with stealing a cap, valued at 45., from John Wainwright, cordial manufacturer, in the Auckland Hotel, on Friday last. The parties had been drinking in the hotel, and the prosecutor, having indulged in rather too much " cordial," fell asleep, and when he awoke he missed his cap. The prisoner had sold it for 3d. He had been several times convicted of larcenies, and was sentenced to three calendar months' imprisonment with hard labour.
