DESTITUTE RELIEF.
To the Editor of the Daily Soctthzkn Caoss. Sir, — Being * constant reader of, and subscriber to your moa^ valuable newspaper, theDiJLY Sodthebij Cbpss, it da^ly coinei under my notice the vast; amount of money required by the Superintendent, oil purpose to relieve the wants of the destitute and unemployed now in the province of Auckland, which I am not in the least surprised at when I come to look around me and perceive the sad state of affairs now, throughout this province. But I have a strong idea that a great deal more good might be done with th« same amount of money, providing the same wa* expressly used only for the purpose of relieving the destitute and unemployed, who, lam perfectly aware, »re in great need of it, and not snch people as are in receipt of £60 per annum or £5 per month, which was dona on Thursday laitj. Whether the applicant told the Relieving Officer the true ttate of hit affairs or not, 1 am unable to say ; but I can authenticate thmt 14 days' rations were giren to a man, on Thursday last, in receipt of tbe above-named income. Mr. Editor, if you think fit to insert this in your widely circulated newspaper, it is at your disposal to do ao. —I am, Ac., 0X8 07 THB UNEMPLOYED. Auckland, July 19, 1867.
