MELBOURNE.

The Argua of the 15th April reports : — The arrival of the English mail having bten telegraphed at an early hour this morning, business throughout the day became in a measure suspended. Advices as telegraphed show a great falling off iv shipments, and cannot fail to influence the markets I favourably. Shipments of oandles are reported at 89 tons, but it must not be overlooked, iv connection with this fact, that at least 30 tons of these have already arrived ; and as in the supplement of last month none were reported for Sydney, it may fairly j be surmised that little or nothing has gone forward to that colony. Spirits, wines, &c, appear as very light. Shipments of oils have also decreased. Private telegrams 'regarding teas report the departure from China of the 'Shelburne, for Sydney. No vessels were loading, but three or four small cargoes were being prepared fer the i colonies, the remainder of the season's congou m the market having been purchased for that purpose. No information regarding shipments coming forward from Calcutta or. other Indian ports reached us during business hours. Breadstuff's show an improvement. Flour is decidedly stiffer, though no actual alteration in price is yet reported. We hear of some 10,000 bushels of Port MacDonnell wheat having been sold, to arrive, for shipment, at equal to 5s 2d net, a figure which shows a tendency to advance. Victorian wheat is also quoted a shade higher, viz., 4s 9d to 5s for prime samples. Maize has been sold, in quantity, at 4s— a slight rise. A parcel of about forty bales of Dundee comsacks has changed hands at 13s 3d. Messrs. J. Curie, Robertson, and Co. have favoured us with the following telegraphic report of the China market:— "Foo Chow, February 23, 1867. The demand for Australia has taken the remaining congous at full rates. No further supplies can be had before the new teas come in in May next. Three or four small cargoes have been prepared for Australia, and are awaiting shipment. No change in rates for congous. Sailed, January 30, *Shelbourne,' for Sydney. Nona loading."
