DISMISSAL OF MR. TUCKWELL.

We regret to find that almost the first Executive act of his Honor the Superintendent has been to dismiss, in a peremptory manner, Mr. Tuckwell, the gaoler at Mount Eden prison. Our space does not permit us to treat of this question as we should. Neither have we all the documents before us. We understand that Mr. Whitaker, before he left ofiice, placed a memorandum on record with reference to the gaol inquiry, which ought to be before the public. Nor should it be forgotten that the present Superintendent, although the mover for the committee of inquiry, and said to be a consenting party to the illogical and silly report of the quorum of the committee, withdrew to the Speaker's room with Mr. Dignan, and declined to vote in favour of its adoption. And yet, the first thing he does is to give effect to a recommendation, without any further inquiry, which he was ashamed to vote for as a member of the Council. If his Honor has in this given way to the clamour of a clique in the face of the debate in the Council, the subsequent presentment of the Grand Jury, and the memorandum of his predecessor, it is greatly to be deplored on account of the public service. The fact that Mr. Tuckwell has only received three days' notice is in itself enough to condemn the action of the Superintendent. The following is a copy of the letter addressed to Mr. Tuckwell, and whioh he received yesterday: — Superintendent's Office,

Auckland, April 26, 1867. Sir, — 1 have to inform you that your services, as gaoler at the Mount Eden Stockade, will not be required by the Provincial Government after the 30th instant. You are therefore requested to transfer the keys, and all property belonging to that establishment, to the Chief Warden, Mr. Young, who will be appointed to act as gaoler, until other arrangements are made for the future management and control of the gaol.— l have, &c, J. Williamson, Superintendent, Joseph Tuckwell, Esq., Gaoler, Mount Eden Stockade.
