WAIROA. (FROM THE CORRESPONDENT OF THE "HAWKE'S BAY HERALD.") August 21.

During the past week we have had some heavy showers, which are not complained of, as our rainfall in this district is seldom sufficient to cause any injury. On the contrary, it is causing that part of the channel of the river which lies between the mud bank and the shingle spit to deepen very fast, and no doubts are entertained as to the possibility of getting the paddle-steamer 'Huntreis' out. In fact, if opportunities like the present are passed over without an effort being made, she may remain for a twelvemonth, as sometimes a few days makes a considerable difference in the depth of water. At present, the bar is, as if has been for some time pa»t, capable of admitting

vessels of larger draught than we are likely to get chartered here. A native was apprehended yesterday, and was charged in the .Resident Magistrate's Court with stealing two £20 notes from a settler at Turiroa, in whose place he stopped for the night. Cash and other effects to the value of £32 have been recovered. Detection lay in his having changed them both in a store here within a very short time after the robbery. The ' Hero' has appeared outside, and is likely to to get in this evening ; the ' Dolphin' is supposed to have gone to Wangawehi. Another correspondent, under that date, writes : — " There are two rocks in the centre of the entrance to the river which are quite visible at low water. Bands of armed natives are prowling about in every direction. A native was tried here the 'other day, before S. Deighton, Esq , R.M., for stealing £40. He was committed for trial. You may expect him in Napier in a day or two. The ' Hero ' is outside as I close this."
